• sounding out unknown words
• comprehending what he/she is reading
• inserting or omitting words when reading
• reading for pleasure
• spelling independently
• spelling words correctly, a week after he/she has been taught
• expressing him/herself on paper
• punctuating when reading and/or writing
• following oral directions
• writing neatly, forming letter with ease
• staying organized, remembering to do things
• completing reading and/or written work
